Josie

Josie was adopted by the Pennington Family, September 2019

Josie is an almost 2 year old smaller harlequin / merle female.  She is about 95 pounds.

Before coming into rescue Josie was not exposed to much of anything outside of her home and does not have any confidence in new situations.  She is not the type of dog you could take out to public social functions.  She does fantastic with one of her foster moms and loves all of the male dogs in the home.  She even is fine with the cats!  She was turned into rescue as she was not getting along with another female dog in the home so we won’t be placing her into a home with female dogs, just in case. She also needs to be closely supervised when first learning to play with new dogs, as she does not pick up on cues that she is being too rough or that another dog is tired of playing.

Josie’s forever home needs lots of patience, as she has to trust you before she loves you, and it can take a while. She bonded with one foster mom right away, but it took about a month to warm up to her other foster mom at all. She does not like strangers touching her. Besides patience, the ideal adopter would also have Dane / dog training experience. It is helpful for her to be around “her person” as much as possible and needs redirection from her anxiety driven behaviors. She has been around children aged 5-11 and has done well with them.

She is crate trained and house broken. She is not destructive at all when left out of her crate, but she does like to be able to go into her crate when she is feeling nervous or to hide her favorite toys and eat her treats. She is doing well with obedience training, but when new people are around, she still gets very anxious and is able to wriggle out of harnesses, collars, etc. to run away. So far a martingale collar has worked best for her, and we are also working with a gentle leader, which she tolerates.

Once she is comfortable, Josie loves car rides, walks, playing fetch, and wrestling with her foster brother Danes. She would probably do well in a home with another large male dog who is playful and tolerant.

She is spayed, up to date on vaccines and microchipped as well has on heart worm prevention monthly.
