McKenzie was adopted by the Foster Family, March 2020!
McKenzie is a big sweet Merle girl who is 6 years old (DOB January 2014). She is a nice, well behaved Dane who was surrendered through no fault of her own. Due to a change in circumstances, her family was no longer able to care for her.
McKenzie was raised with other Danes and now is currently fostered with 3 other Danes (2 males and another female), and gets along with them all very well. She is fairly new to rescue, but so far meets new dogs and people nicely, and gets along with everyone with a sweet, easygoing demeanor. She is better suited to life with a male dog and medium to dane sized. Small animals are somewhat curious to McKenzie and she likes to chase them.
McKenzie’s issue is that she is severely overweight. She is 171 pounds, and based on her height and frame should ideally be closer to 120. We are looking for an adopter who understands how harmful obesity is on a Dane’s joints and overall health, and will commit to helping her slim down so she can enjoy a long active healthy life. Her fosters are working on this by feeding her a high quality, low calorie kibble, with supplements, vegetables, and lots of walks and play for exercise. Luckily, Kenz loves being active, is great at parks and on walks, and is happy to be rewarded with various veggies instead of lots of treats.
Behaviorally, McKenzie is a very good girl. She is talkative and vocal and will let you know when she wants attention! Occasionally other dogs don’t quite know what to make of her upon first meeting, because she is a loud and energetic player. But she is just a big sweetheart and seems like a happy girl. Kenz already knows her basic commands (sit, lie down, come, etc.) and is responsive to verbal correction. We are working on her pulling when on leash, and she has made great improvement in a very short time. She loves human attention and would like to be up on the couch snuggling her humans, but will get down onto her dog bed immediately when directed. She also loves going out and meeting new people, and is very well behaved in public. McKenzie is crate trained but is not destructive in the home and does not need to be crated.
McKenzie is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, on monthly heartworm prevention, microchipped and daily joint supplements.
